RISE is an initiative of the Bridge Community Church in Battersea. It exists to nurture and develop the leadership potential of young black men, empowering them to become the next generation of successful leaders.
We provide free educational and emotional support for boys aged 11-14. We focus on black boys because research shows them to be at particular risk of being educationally and socially disadvantaged. Students are referred to us by local schools, faith groups and youth agencies. We work alongside these organisations and parents to motivate and encourage students to make progress in class and aim higher in life.
We focus on developing new skills that work synergistically with school curricula, like coding and presentation. Alongside this we inculcate a sense of civic responsibility. We also seek to develop the interpersonal skills of each child, instilling in them self confidence and unlocking their creative flair. As part of this, we are unshamed about the fact that Christ can help us to grow as individuals. As we understand his values, they can shape our values for the better.
OBJECTIVES
Role Models: To nurture a new generation of positive role models for our schools and communities.
“A mentor is a rainbow in the clouds.”
Intellectual Curiosity: To arouse and encourage intellectual curiosity by connecting abstract ideas to everyday life.
“Success doesn’t come to you ... you go to it.”
Skills and Service: To develop academic, social and work skills necessary for effective participation in the future workplace. To develop an appreciation for and lifelong commitment to service.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Exposure: To broaden our students’ horizons through exposure to business, the arts, politics and public life. We aim to instil such values and principles in the context of respect, boundaries and a Christian ethos.
“Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves.”
